Supermarine Spitfire FR Mk IX MK716

The Spitfire was a true multi-role aircraft. From capable interceptor and fighter aircraft, through air to ground attacker and stable photo-reconnaissance platform; there weren’t many roles a Spitfire couldn’t perform!

Photo-reconnaissance was vital to planners, and the normally unarmed aircraft were often at the mercy of fighters should they be bounced while performing their mission. As the Allies progressed into Europe, a need was identified for armed reconnaissance so the Fighter Reconnaissance role was added to the Spitfire’s repertoire!

MK716 was initially produced as an LF Mk IX and flew with 312 (Czech) Sqn. She was later converted with the addition of cameras while keeping her armament. She was assigned to 414 Squadron RCAF and saw out the remainder of the war with them.
